Summary
“You brought a book?”
“Like you didn’t.”
She concedes the point and digs a paperback out of her clutch—Austen’s Persuasion, a good choice. Jess displays his own masticated copy of Tobias Wolff’s Old School, which feels like a consistently fitting read when encased within the two-hundred year old hallowed halls of Chilton Preparatory. The book’s cover is hanging on by Scotch tape and a prayer, and half the pages are creased with undone dog ears.
“Man, we’re a couple of anti-social freaks,” Rory declares.
Jess grins. “Just call me Thomas Pynchon.”

built from scraps
“Everybody needs someone. That’s what you said, right?” Pepper meets his eyes and he’s struck by the way she’s almost pleading. “We both lost. We can help each other.”
Her hand, palm up and open, stretches into the space between them.
Peter hesitates.
Then he takes it.
or: the one where tony was dusted instead of peter, so he and pepper try to figure out the whole ‘family’ thing together.
(oh, and it turns out that the man who died in peter’s arms on an alien planet is his biological father. who knew, right?)
spidey squad
“We stop bad guys, that’s it. There’s no need to get philosophical about a job like this, okay? It’ll only drive you crazy.”
His head hangs. Nat gently pries the bottle of scotch out of his grip and sets it aside.
“This job… it gets to you. It gets to me. Always has, no matter what side I was on. Somehow you always end up feeling more like a weapon than a human being.”
He raises his head. “I don’t want to hurt people.”
“Neither do I, but sometimes it’s necessary. Sometimes you have to hurt the people who plan on hurting others.”
or: five missions that take place over the course of the missing year in built from scraps.
threads of hope
“Morgan,” he says, “it’s gonna be okay. No matter what, you’ll get through it—and if you need me—”
She holds up the little Spider-Man toy attached to her backpack. “I press his belly.”
“Right.”
“Like the Pillsbury Dough Boy.”
Peter rolls his eyes and kisses her forehead as the bell rings. “Okay, go on. Don’t burn the building down or anything.”
Morgan looks back at him at least five times on the way inside and each time, he smiles. On the inside his stomach is in knots, which is ridiculous. It’s kindergarten. He’s done kindergarten. All they do is learn to write letters and sing about the rainbow and shit.
She’ll be fine.
or: six months after tony and pepper get married, things have finally settled—until they haven’t.
torn and tattered
The Secretary of State stands when Peter and Nat enter. He holds out his hand for Peter to shake. “Ah, Mr. Parker, we’ve never been formally introduced. I’m Thaddeus Ross. Jesus, that’s quite the grip you’ve got.”
Peter nods. “Yeah well, y’know,” he shrugs. “Comes along with being bit by a radioactive spider.”
or: how much crap can peter take on before he finally breaks?
the little death
Madame B grabs her chin and locks their eyes and it means that she is saying something very serious. She says, “Listen to me now: forget what came before this night. Forget the life you had, forget your family. They did not love you or want you. If they did, they would never have sent you here.”
Maria’s lip begins to tremble. Madame B tuts. “Hush now, all is well. We want you. We will love you the way that you deserve to be loved. We will teach you everything you need to know. Do you understand? We are your family now.”
this warm repair
“America’s Next Top Model speaking.”
May rolls her eyes. “Hey, do you happen to know if Peter showed up for work this morning?”
There’s a pause. “Why do you ask?”
“He left his phone,” May explains, perching on the edge of her nephew’s bed. “It’s not the end of the world or anything, I just thought it was…”
“Weird? Agreed. I, uh—I can call down, hold on.”
