The Boot
Punching out a certain asshole who didn't know how to respect women lands Akira in juvenile detention. And it's an authoritarian shithole, but at least there's one good thing here: Ryuji.
(prequel to Out the Barrel of a Gun. Not necessary to read this to get that.)
Out the Barrel of a Gun
Subtitled: "Murders and Feelings and Manipulation" or, "Persona 5 except everyone is a rotten adult now."
Akira is a vigilante with a military history. Along with Ryuji, his best friend since juvie, he assassinates deserving targets to help Futaba get revenge for her mother's murder.
Then he impulsively sends an unsolicited dick pic to the popular mystery novelist Goro Akechi—and Akechi replies. Akechi is secretive to the extreme, but to be fair, Akira is lying to him about everything, too.
Oh, and Prime Minister Masayoshi Shido is in his second term, and slowly turning the nation toward fascism.

Summary
One phone call leads to Akira having his most fervent wish granted.
A year before the Phantom Thieves ever existed, Akira stumbles into a Palace for the first time along with his not-really girlfriend, Kasumi. When they get split up, a handsome prince in white appears to give him a hand looking for her. Said handsome prince has a mission in the Metaverse, and he wants Akira on his side.
But a certain girl with glasses and downcast eyes keeps dogging Akira and Goro's trails through the Metaverse--and Akira is tortured by visions of his new partner's death in a past life he doesn't remember. And what is this strange distortion that the nav says belongs to "nobody"?
Something is wrong with this world, and someone is trying to keep Akira from figuring out what.
