With quirks ranging from all-powerful to lackluster, it's only natural that some lucky few get to bask in the limelight while others can only tilt their heads up to watch. But some people aren't born with strength, or even with mediocrity. Some are born with nothing - doomed to lie forgotten on the edges of society, like barely crackling white noise in the background of captivating music.

Midoriya Izuku refuses to let that happen to him. Quirkless or not, it doesn't matter to him anymore. He wants to be a hero - so, he will be.

    The old bait and switch

Nobody ever thought quirkless, weak, weird Midoriya Izuku was dangerous.
This perception carried over to his first year high school class, because really despite the super strength Midoriya didn't have it in him to be dangerous.

That was their first mistake. And the one that would see them fall.

Rooks and Bishops don't get to choose their moves

The villain team were aware of what awaited them in the aftermath of their actions. U.A. publicized everything- they were willing to be ridiculed and demonized the second they signed up for the villain team.

So when Nezu doesn't publicize alarms bells are set off.

Midoriya Izuku has left a fake city in ashes, Aizawa Shouta has tasked himself with keeping his new protege safe and Nezu?

Nezu is watching the world figuratively burn and discovering that he likes it.

Bakugou is no hero. He is a bully, a tyrant, a villain. He wants to hurt people, make them submit to his power and his alone. He wants to be powerful so no one will stand in his way, so that no one can tell him no. Izuku glared at Bakugou with hatred and anger and all the emotions that shouldn’t be able to pass through the mind of a 4-year-old.
    How dare he.
Izuku growled, agreeing with the voice, as Bakugou aimed another explosion towards his face, the three abusers laughing as Izuku watched him with accurate eyes. Just before Katsuki’s hand even reached his face, there was a prickling in his gums. His brain talking to him, pleading to move, to get away from the pain. Katsuki’s hand made contact with the side of his neck and suddenly there was nothing.
No pain, no hurt or confusion, just nothing.

    read between the lines

Quirkless as the day he was born, Izuku is determined to become a hero and takes the Yūei entrance exam. With the highest written exam score in over a decade, he is offered admission to General Studies, Class 1-C. The editor-in-chief of the school paper approaches Izuku after finding his misplaced notebook and asks if he would like to to become a staff writer. Urged to turn his Hero Analysis journals into a column, he agrees, with the caveat he can go by a pen name.

The column is a success, quickly amassing a huge following, and it becomes a mark of social pride in the Hero Department to be featured in an article by "Deku."

Izuku has, at the same time, developed a very inconvenient crush on a very pretty, very unapproachable student in 1-A. That's not really a problem, since Izuku is basically invisible to a guy like him anyway.
Well... it wasn't a problem, until Izuku accidentally publishes a huge confessional op-ed piece, broadcasting his feelings for the world to read.

Meanwhile, poor Shōto is dealing with his asshole father and just wants to eat his cold soba in peace.

Tododeku. Minor Shindenki, Kiribaku, Momojiro, Erasermic. Just fluff & an AU canon rewrite!

extra! extra! read all about it!

Izuku Midoriya, after being thrust into the national spotlight as the column writer "Deku" for Yūei's school newspaper, continues to struggle with his place as a quirkless student in a quirk-based society. With his new, very public relationship with the son of the Number Two Hero, and following a few failed attempts against his life, Izuku definitely deserves to take a bit of time to focus on himself and his writing--and what better way to do that than to spend 10-days shadowing Professor David Shield, All Might's old sidekick, on I-Island? Being away from Japan and all the media attention will surely do him some good, helping the Professor prepare for the I-Island Expo, an event that highlights another year of hero-based technological developments.

With his pen in hand, this feels like a dream come true for Izuku... until the Expo is infiltrated by villains and the entire island is put on lockdown.

At the same time, Shōto must overcome the parts of himself and his past that he'd rather ignore, if he wants to feel worthy of being with Izuku. Background Momojirou, Kiribaku, Shindenki. Second installment of 'read between the lines'. Covers the events of My Hero Academia: Two Heroes (before Training camp arc).
