Summary

In the span of three months, both Peter and Tony Stark went missing, assumed dead. Even when Tony came back from Afghanistan with a suit of armour and a glowing blue heart, Peter was still gone.

Peter shrugged, schooling his face to remain unbothered. “Yet here I am.”
So the rumour spread that Peter Parker, top of the class and the only competent member of the track team, had a Stark Industries internship. That made it more difficult when Miss Adler, the Chemistry teacher, announced their field trip there.

“I don’t need a babysitter,” Peter grumbled as he sank into the sofa, arms crossed tightly over his chest.
“SHIELD says otherwise,” Pepper replied, her voice light.
“I’m seventeen,” Peter shot back. “I can look after myself.”
“I don’t doubt that,” Pepper replied. “But you’re not allowed to look after yourself.”
“You know, once,” Peter said, as if she hadn’t spoken, “I got shot in the alps and I dug the bullet out all by myself and got myself back to base and I completed my mission to assassinate the ambassador from Sweden.”
Pepper paused, behind him. She then planted a kiss on the top of his head. “That is horrifying. Never tell me about that again."

Peter has officially decided that he wants to use his abilities for good. He wants to be like Tony, like the Avengers, like the New York vigilantes that keep people safe.
He can't do that without Ned by his side.

Peter nodded, producing the book from behind his back. He had about fifty pages left; when he’d started reading the night before, he couldn’t stop. He’d fallen asleep around four AM, and upon waking, just started right back up where he left off.
“I’ll probably be finished by dinner, but Bucky told me there was a movie?” Pepper’s smile widened. “I was wondering if you wanted to watch it tonight?”

Pepper and Tony just want to go on a Valentine's Day date, and they decide to leave Peter alone in the house to do so. Peter, with his first taste of freedom, breaks the number one rule: don't let anyone in the house.

Tony had never wanted a son because he didn’t want to be a father.
Because, fathers, to Tony, were strict, cruel and condescending. They lacked a belief in their children, talked down to them and made them cry at night. Fathers ignored their sons, fathers berated their sons, fathers posed for cameras with their sons as if they were proud of them, but immediately turned their backs once the reporters went away.
Tony didn’t know how to be any other kind of father.

He needed to sleep but lately he’d been forgetting what that was like.
Lately, he’d been spending his nights pacing his room, trying to stop the images of a mangled body from slipping into his mind.
He'd see the guns, see himself, see blood smeared across his knuckles.
He forced those images from his mind and they were only replaced with his Mom. With Pepper, on her knees as the compound crumbled around them.
WHUMPTOBER DAY THREE: INSOMNIA

Clint is teaching Peter about the ventilation system in the Tower, and how to navigate it. Steve just wants to go on a run. Vision likes chess and Peter has gotten a little too close to Natasha's past for her liking.
Sam has plans to hustle all of New York, Wanda is called upon for an important favour and Bucky really should've told Peter not to wear such an obnoxious t-shirt.
Rhodey just needs to apologise and Tony tells Peter more about the past he's forgotten.
Also contains: multiple heart-to-hearts, an arm wrestling competition in a dive bar and the internet, catching their first ever glimpse of the prodigal Stark son.
out of the shadows into the light
Peter Parker won't exist for much longer; will be confined to the memory of a HYDRA agent and replaced by Peter Stark, missing son of Iron Man. The whole world will finally know that he's alive and home at last.
But with the reveal of his identity, there's a threat looming. HYDRA. They've wanted their assassin back since the day he was taken from them and they're pulling out the big guns to ensure his return.
And with HYDRA, there comes a familiar face that Peter didn't think he'd ever see again.
he deserves the gentlest of epilogues
There were bad days, but Peter always powered through them to get to the good.
They burned the remains of the Black Spider suit, and he burned the remains of that person in his soul.
The Black Spider may have existed once, but he didn’t anymore. He was buried at the bottom of a HYDRA base with the Scarlet Spider, with all the bad things he’d done and all the blood that soaked his hands.
Peter was just trying to clean them. He was just searching for the shade of his skin through all the red. He’d get there one day.
