Dark AU, diverging from the end of the Two Towers: Sauron regains his Ring in Ithilien, and a very bleak world emerges for those who survive the Ringwar to make their way in. 3. Summary

What if Boromir didn't receive the dream-summons and so stayed in Minas Tirith and Faramir went north instead? PG warning: this is a hard tale, but not a dark one. At crucial times, characters in LotR react instead of act. For example, when the Fellowship splits and the return of the king. Using the branch point of Boromir's dream I was able to examine both of these important choices.

This commentary AU is tersely written. It is primarily a bookverse story. Because I make large jumps when my timeline matches the original closely, this is intended for readers well familiar with the Ring War trilogy. Comments and typo catches are welcome.

  5. Summary

“If [Sauron] regains [the Ring], your valour is vain, and his victory will be swift and complete: so complete that none can foresee the end of it while this world lasts.”

    Gandalf at The Last Debate.

    …

Gandalf was considered among the Wise, and his advice and predictions were seldom wrong. But though indeed it seemed, for a while, that Sauron’s reign would endure until the last age had passed, it was not so.
    ...

The grass still grew long on the wide plains, and thick in the hidden valleys of the mountain range, stubborn as weeds. Last to give way, and first to re-grow, though trampled by iron-shoes.

    Anthology containing:

Where the Grass Grows I: We May Yet Stand

The Quest failed. Sam killed Gollum before the Ring was destroyed and now darkness rules the lands of Middle-earth. A small group from the resistance battles both hunger and mistrust, to keep hope alive. But will the sacrifices outweigh the gain?

Book one of six. MEFA 3rd place 2011, incomplete stories.

Where the Grass Grows Green II: On Bended Knee

AU. The Quest failed and darkness rules the lands of Middle-earth. For the captives in the Land of Shadow, hope is bleak, and at best they strive to stand, even if only on their knees. And Sauron is set on bending Elessar to his will.

  14. Summary

This novel begins as a coming of age story set in a time of war and its aftermath. Interaction with a dramatically changed Arda reveals new challenges for beloved canon characters. Their stories are not recounted with ponderous reverence, but with humor and sympathy for individuals who are flawed, passionate, funny, and conflicted. This is not one's standard Eomer/Lothiriel formula romance. (Awards: 2006 MEFA Second Place, Romance-Incomplete; 2012 First Place, WIP The Tree and Flower Awards)
