Robin has always been able to do what Batman couldn’t. It was okay that Bruce won’t kill. Dick wouldn’t ask him to compromise his morals.
But he had no such restrictions. He doesn’t mind killing, getting his hands dirty, and being a monster if it means his family is alive.

Is it because Damian is the oldest here, and thus felt his spot as Father's heir was safe?
Perhaps it was that Damian had the chance to be Father's only child for long enough that he had started to internalize the ideals of non-lethal fighting and helping those who are weaker than yourself.
Perhaps instead it was that Damian had seized the initiative and would have received it badly if Father had been the one to introduce the idea of siblings.
Or perhaps, in the end, it was none of those reasons, and instead Timothy Drake's similarity to a bedraggled and miserable cat had tapped into the part of Damian that Grandfather had never been able eliminate.
