Fandom’s Race Problem and the AO3 Ship Stats

After four years working on my AO3 Ship Stats project, and having previously addressed issues of misogyny in this data set, I feel like it’s past time to talk about the elephant in the room:

    Fandom is kinda racist.

    But!: A Response to Responses

This post is a follow-up to Fandom’s Race Problem (and to a lesser extent, Why M/M?) and a rebuttal to some of the criticisms of myself and others’ work on sexism and racism in fandom that I’ve seen in the past. No statistics here: this is my opinion, pure and simple.

    Summary

You are a perceptive reader. You’ve no doubt noticed that Drarry is canon. We know the color of Draco’s eyes roughly a million words before we find out Ron’s - enough said. Yet, in spite of on-page Drarry teasing, stalking, and obsessing, Rowling still gives the reader endgame Hinny in the epilogue. If you’ve ever wondered why, you are not alone.

This is the story of why canon exists the way it does, and why Harry and Draco wouldn’t have it any other way.

    Anthology containing:

    Between the Pages

    Excerpt:

Much to Harry’s surprise, Malfoy started laughing. It wasn’t a joyful laugh. It was the kind of evil, smug laugh he always imagined Malfoy having. “Oh, Potter. This is too much. Did you finally see it? After all these years? Did you finally have an off-script thought?”

“What do you know about it?” Harry asked, shrugging off Malfoy’s hand.

Malfoy’s shoulders were still shaking with condescending mirth. “You really have no idea, do you?” he asked.

Harry repeated himself, “What. Is. It.” It wasn’t a question; it was a command.

“It’s the ‘rator.” Malfoy finally replied, still catching his breath.

    ~

In short: Malfoy holds all the cards. If Harry wants to find out about the ‘rator, and keep his dream of being an auror, he’s going to have to spend a lot more time with him.

    After the Pages

It’s eight years after the war and the final book in the Harry Potter series is about to be published. After that, Harry won’t ever have to see Rowling, or Malfoy, again. He and Malfoy broke up six years ago after a catastrophic sequence of events that Harry relives, over and over again, in the pensive each night. Yet, when both Gringotts and Grimmauld Place are robbed, Harry finds he might not be able to get rid of Malfoy as easily as he thought.

  4. Summary

Detective Harry Potter is an ordinary bloke. He is not the type to hear voices. Until he is.

While his friends worry he's finally gone 'round the bend, Harry becomes convinced that he is the ill-fated protagonist of someone else's narrative. And if this narrative seems to be about him developing inconvenient feelings for a suspect, well, that's hardly Harry's fault. But why is the voice in his head so suspicious of Mr. Malfoy, anyway? Enlisting the help of an accomplished literary professor, Harry and Albus work to determine if Harry is losing the plot- or finding it.

On the other side of London, the author of the world's most celebrated book series suffers from a case of writer's block.

    ---

“You’re the one with the magic typewriter,” Harry agreed quietly. “But what about all the minutes I exist without you? I don’t disappear when you lift your fingers from the keys. I’m still here. I’m directionless. But I’m my own.”

[Fandom stats] Completion rates on AO3: not as bad as you think by toastystats (destinationtoast)

... it depends on what you think, of course. But my previous analyses showed a low completion rate (fewer than 50% of multi-chapter works were complete), and this follow-up shows that more like 80% of fic eventually gets completed.

[Fandom stats] Omegaverse (as of 2013) by toastystats (destinationtoast)

[Fandom stats] Changes to Sherlock fanworks, post-S2 by toastystats (destinationtoast)

I tested two hypotheses (on AO3 in June 2013):

H1: There was a big spike in amount of fanfic right after both S1 and S2, but then it settled down to a pretty steady state during most of the hiatus.

H2: There was a big spike in amount of angsty fic after TRF aired.

A quick look at whether authors of RPF are more likely to limit those works to just AO3 members, and what the proportions are. I suspect this applies to more than just slash, but it was a response to a question specifically about slash.

[Fandom stats] Chatty tags, canonical tags, and synonyms on AO3 by toastystats (destinationtoast)

This started out as an attempt to estimate the number of long, chatty tags on AO3, and to see how much chattiness varied by fandom. There are a lot of discussions in fandom about gender representation in fanworks, and whether fandom is shortchanging female characters. Over the last several years, I’ve seen various debates and wondered about the underlying numbers. So I went and found some… and then got slightly obsessed analyzing them.

These analyses is not going to be able to address some kinds of questions, many of which can’t be answered with numbers. But I hope to answer some questions, and add more data and new nuances to discussions.

    Summary

"The Dai Bendu language was spoken by the members of the ancient Order of Dai Bendu on the frozen planet of Ando Prime. The name of the Je'daii Order was forged in that language."

"Every language is like a one-of-a-kind species. It captures unique conceptualizations of the world and has its own ways of constructing words, phrases and sentences for communicating ideas. As we compare the words and structures of various languages, we come to a greater understanding of our world. (...) Language captures how we perceive the world around us and how we relate to one another, it defines who we are. The Mother tongue language we grow up with is the one used to express what is in our hearts; our heart language."

"Studying language is invaluable for learning about other cultures and mapping their respective developments, histories, myths, customs, etc. Linguistics also helps us understand and document geographical /environmental influences, periods of migration/diaspora, origin of certain spiritual beliefs, etc. through the study of things like cognates, shared myths between cultures, language families, and tracking differences in word usage and dialects over a long period of time."

Heart Language by aroacejoot & ghostwriterofthemachine & loosingletters

Notes on the Jedi Conlang Dai Bendu developed by Yours Truly for the sake of incorporating linguistics into Star Wars.
Includes grammar, meta essays on the language and translations of canon dialogues.

An Imprecise Translation {ben} by ghostwriterofthemachine

Dai Bendu is the language of the Jedi.

Here are four times Obi-Wan Kenobi has heard the word ben.

A Befitting Title {kanan} by loosingletters

Dai Bendu is the language of the Jedi.

Here are four times Caleb Dume heard the word kanan.

Levels of Sincerity {cahshee, ankai'a} by loosingletters

In which Ahsoka Tano has the most embarrassing Masters in at least two languages.

Terms of endearment, Disaster Lineage Style.

    Connotations {orhma, Anohrah} by ghostwriterofthemachine

Anakin’s Padawan is strong and brave and fierce and he has every faith in her abilities. He’s known from the beginning that she would fight her way back to him, Trandoshans or no. He’s known from the beginning, on some level, that he would see her again.

Or, the aftermath of the Padawan Lost arc, but Anakin and Ahsoka have more words to speak in.

    Acceptance {padawanir, jaieh'ir} by loosingletters

As a Jedi, you had to formally accept your new apprentice and your new Master.

Obi-Wan, Anakin and Ahsoka from the beginning of their apprenticeships to their ends.

Insult and Injury {imkai'an} by ghostwriterofthemachine & loosingletters

The worst thing you can call someone in Mando’a is coward. The worst insult to the Jedi is one they dare not speak often.

Five times Anakin Skywalker heard it regardless.

Reassurance {enoji brei ormah} by loosingletters

There are days where Ahsoka Tano is the Commander of the 501st battalion, and then there are days where she is Anakin Skywalker's fourteen-year-old Padawan, stuck in the aftermath of a bloody battle, surrounded by the dead.

    Or, Anakin sings to Ahsoka.

Purest Expression of Grief {haj dai} by ghostwriterofthemachine

    Order 66 happens.

Cal goes quiet, Kanan thinks too much, and Ahsoka can never go back.

(Or; three children and a dying language, after they've seen their people die.)

immersion theory {oola} by ghostwriterofthemachine & loosingletters

Immersion Theory: When it comes to language learning, immersion usually means learning a new language in the most natural way possible – in practice, being in a situation where the language is spoken.

Or, five times the Clones stumble over Dai Bendu and one time they don’t.

A Discussion of the Coruscant Centralization in the light of delo anohrah by loosingletters

In order to lessen the chance of a Sith resurgence, the Order began training children from birth. In addition, the training of Padawans was centralized on Coruscant, to remove the danger of unsupervised students delving into forbidden Sith knowledge. - Wookiepedia on the Ruusan Reformation

When asked to abandon their temples and move to Coruscant, many Jedi protest. The essay "A Discussions of the Coruscant Centralization in the light of delo anohrah" became well-known for advocating in favor of the Coruscant Centralization.

[Or, in-universe essay on the Ruusan Reformation from the perspective of a Jedi Master.]

Snapshots {ibli nev zahlah} by aroacejoot & ghostwriterofthemachine & loosingletters

Snapshots in the life of the Jedi, centered around certain words in their language.

Retranslation of the Sith Code from a Linguistic Perspective by loosingletters

While Mando’a is undoubtedly the conlang with the most extensive vocabulary, it is not the soundest Star Wars conlang from a linguistic perspective. That honor belongs to the version of the Sith conlang that was later amended and developed by Ben Grossblatt. The Sith Code, as we know it, was developed by David Gaider in 2003 for the game Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. Grossblatt’s conlang was created seven years later in 2010.

When you consider this, Grossblatt had two options when creating his conlang and translation of the Code. He could translate the Code from English into Sith, or he could pretend the English (or “Basic”) version of the Code resulted from a translation from Sith.

TLDR: I took a look at the English version of the Sith Code and decided it doesn't quite pick up all the nuances the text has in the Sith conlang and proceeded to write 3.000 words analyzing it.

Sometimes an alien menace is a good thing.

The Many Faces of J'onn by Darklady & offpanel_archivist & Smittywing (Smitty) & trixiechick

At Darklady's behest, I would like to propose a challenge to help us round out a small
collection of J'onn's attempts to sneak under Bruce's radar in some disguise. To date,
J'onn has been utterly unsuccessful in fooling Bruce with any form he assumes. Bruce
always figures it out. There will come a day when that changes (maybe), but for this
challenge, that time hasn't happened yet.

    So here's the challenge:
Write a story in which J'onn attempts to sneak an identity by Bruce and fails. The
parameters are pretty broad (remember J'onn snuck into Bruce's office as a cat not long
ago - that didn't work either).

    Words: I dunno - 500 sounds good.

Winners - well, all us readers will be the winners - this is more for fun than anything. If
we think we can fit the story into J'onnverse canon, I might ask to do so, but otherwise,
    this is just for play.

Looking forward to seeing what you come up with...
    Chicago

    Anthology containing:

    Crossing the River

Five flaps of the butterfly wing; or, four lessons that Anakin Skywalker learned, and when he applied them.

    Exodus Flight

The war is over, but not everything is automatically okay. The Clones are worried about the Jedi. The Jedi are worried about the Clones. Everybody loves each other way too much to leave each other alone.

    Kanan Bound

There are just some things in life that you feel better when they’re on paper. Grey has decided that adopting Caleb is one of those things.

    There Is No Never Land

Obi-wan is getting a new Padawan. Cody is grappling with the idea of looking after a tiny person who isn't a brother. Alpha-17 is struggling with emotions in general. The GAR's two most notorious "textbook soldiers" and the "perfect Jedi" really need a hug. Luckily, they get one.
TW: mentioned past child abuse. Nothing graphic, but be safe.

    Where Youth and Laughter Go

Due to a random kidnapping by our favorite pirate, a piece of Obi-wan and Anakin's past comes loose. The rest of the mess follows. Luckily, they don't have to deal with it alone. Or, the Clones are not the only ones with traumatic childhoods.

The Land of Milk and Honey

Wolffe, Katooni, and Master Koon go on an arbitration mission for a small planet. It goes mostly well.

In the Garden of Four Rivers

Due to the machinations of Thire, the Coruscant Guard is assigned bodyguard duty to their favorite Senator, Senator Riyo Chuchi, as she heads home for a vacation. They pick up guests somewhere along the way.

    WARNING: MENTIONED PAST CHILD ABUSE

    Folkvang

A cure for the Clones' accelerated aging has been developed. Unfortunately, it depends on the one person who would be happy to never see a Clone again. Colt and Shaak Ti are dispatched to persuade him, and end up picking up a stray.

    The Land Under the Mountain

The Dantooine Enclave has many secrets. Obi-wan and Anakin, in typical Kenobi-Skywalker fashion, have discovered one.
Alpha would really like to know why this always happens to them. So does Obi-wan.

Put Our Faces to the Sun

Throughout the many twists, turns, and upheavals (both physical and emotional) in the Jedi and Clones’ lives, there remains one constant. Kids, be they Clone or Jedi, get into mischief.

(For those new to the Arcadia ‘Verse: You might want to read the previous installments of this series before this work. Things will make more sense that way.)

    Arcadia Meta

I received a favorable response to my worldbuilding notes, so I’m posting them.

    The Changing of the Guard

Leia is kidnapped on her way to her Senatorial confirmation! In typical Skywalker fashion, this leads to a spectacular adventure!

    Summary
    Anthology containing:

    Wayne Manor

Thomas and Martha Wayne are Gotham's most famous martyrs. They used to be a wife and a husband, a mother and a father, doting parents. They could also be cunning, wicked, glamorous, decadent; an heir and a gold-digger, beautiful people in a beautiful house. It takes a certain kind of parents to make a man like Bruce Wayne, and Alfred can't take all the blame. He can't even take most of it.

    Empty Graves

Time travelers who plan to kill Superman never account for Martha Kent in their plans. She may not be the World's Finest, but she's a mother with a shotgun, and all told that might be scarier.

    Hardening Off

Martha Kent adopted an alien, and against all odds it went about as well as that sort of thing can go. Even if the journey was a bigger pain than the destination might lead one to believe.

    Gotham High

Between freshman and sophomore year, Bruce Wayne had a growth spurt. He did not get any better at socializing.

    Intoxicating

Lois and Clark's first kiss didn't count. Because... reasons.

    Bad Publicity

Bruce Wayne is either really bad at Twitter, or really, really good.

    Third Wheel

It isn't quite a love triangle. For one thing, Clark's the only one romantic enough to even think the word 'love'. For another, Clark and Bruce would be beating the holy hell out of each other even without Lois' involvement. And if Lois was aware of the secrets they were keeping, she'd be beating the holy hell out of the both of them. Overall, Bruce's visit to Metropolis has been a mixed bag for everyone involved.

    Matches

What in the hell kind of name for an alias is Matches?

    Reviving a Tomb

Selina Kyle doesn't like Gotham. Batman doesn't like thieves. He's too old for her. She's too young for him. They aren't quite strangers, but they really are.

    Hostile Work Environment

Clark Kent is a menace, and Lois doesn't get why she's the only one to have noticed.

    Perfect Alibi

Bruce Wayne is very popular at parties. Bruce Wayne always has an alibi. These two things are related, and only sometimes on purpose.

    Office Meeting

Bruce Wayne deals with supervillains almost as much as Batman does.

    Give and Take

They always seem to be running into each other at museums. He only ties her up sometimes. She still always manages to get more than he'd planned to give.

    Christmas in Kansas

Clark Kent invites Bruce Wayne and Diana of Themyscira to his parents' house for Christmas. It goes, in general, pretty okay.

    Sweet

The Dark Knight strikes fear into the hearts of men. And pretty much just men. It's a problem.

    Gotham's Favorite Son

    Thanks, Gotham side of Tumblr.

    Arm Candy

Where Bruce Wayne goes, models follow. It's almost a joke, the way he wears them like watches, girls too young for him hanging off his arms. It's a wonder he can even tell them apart.

    Unpaid Internship

The Justice League needs to stop a world-ending doomsday event, but that happens so often it's barely even interesting. What's more interesting is who Batman brought with him to work. This raises a lot of questions, and Batman isn't answering them.

    Partition

Bruce Wayne does not get the appeal of sex in the back of a limo, but he's pretty sure it's all Beyonce's fault.

    Unfamiliar Faces

Black Canary has never met Batman before, but he's pretty sure he recognizes her. Zatanna is less than thrilled.

    Informed Consent

Lois doesn't actually believe that handjobs don't count as sex. She just needs to convince Clark that they don't count. None of this would even be an issue if he'd just stop trying to keep secrets from her.

    Invasive

Batman and Poison Ivy team up to fight kudzu. Or not.

    Anti-Social

    Batman needs a Robin.

    No Whammies

Poison Ivy has captured Nightwing, which means a very serious rescue mission is necessary.

    Unmasked

Catwoman is Selina Kyle, and Bruce has always known it. Batman is Bruce Wayne, but Selina just found that out. Shockingly, it turns out the dude has issues.

    versus

Whoever wins... we also win. It's a win-win situation. Batman is lying when he says that it isn't. Don't listen to Batman.

    Unrealistic

What do Wonder Woman, Superman, and Batman think about when they're trying to get off? A serious question seeking serious answers.

    AUX

The most contentious part of any road trip is the playlist.

    Race Around the Lot

Who's faster: Superman, or the Flash?

    Let's Dance

They're trapped in a ghost ballet. You can't punch ethereal ballerinas. It's not just rude, it's physically impossible. They're going to be stuck there forever and then die, probably.

    Night Shift

Metropolis never sleeps, but Superman does. Most nights, anyway.

    Superfluous

Wonder Woman and Catwoman have sex in Batman's bed. Bruce has a difficult life, full of angst and suffering.

    Comes In Threes

Felicity Smoak has a bad track record with billionaires.

    Nominal

Don't ask why Batman is sad unless you're willing to give him the time to consult his spreadsheet.

    Whammied

Welcome to the sex pollen quarantine zone (this fic, this fic is the quarantine zone).

    Stolen Moments

Selina Kyle spends all day in bed, and then takes a bath. Lots of cats get petted.

    Gone Fishing

A very normal vacation with friends.

    Backup

Nightwing shows up ten minutes late with McDonald's.

    Miscellany

Various short bits and pieces from Tumblr that don't justify their own fic, and aren't planned to become part of anything larger.

    Suspension of Belief

They always talk about the calm before the storm.
They always dream about the sunshine after the rain.
But the truth is that it’s the middle, the moment the thunder strikes and the earth rattles, the moment it pours, that all becomes very, very clear.

A story about those three years of silence, three years to be apart, three years to think it through.
Three years to learn how to regret.

    Trust Fall

Tony has always been creator and destroyer. A man who can reach out and touch and make the world burn or gleam gold, or both, and he never knows which one it’ll be until it's too late. But for all he is a man of science, he cannot deny the obvious, cruel, cruel irony of his curse, of his legacy, of his fate - Of this mission he’s been given, seemingly, by the universe itself.

Tony once built himself a new heart with a box of scraps. Now, he will have to find a way to bring back life directly from the ashes.

And if he does not burn himself to the ground on the way, maybe – just maybe, he will live long enough to see his world turn to gold one last time.

    Anthology containing:

    Only In Gotham

While on the road, Alfred, Lucius, and Lucius' PA are taken hostage by a group of armed men who thought they were hitting Bruce Wayne's car. Too bad they did not count with Wayne's finest...

Second Robin 101: An Austere Approach To Knowledge

Barbara is supposed to help Jason catch up on his lost years of academic progress, but Jason has only been living in the manor for two weeks and 'trust' is not yet in his vocabulary. When the first home-tutoring session goes awry, Babs decides that a change of scenery might be in order...

    All You Can Eat

Bruce is out of town for a business meeting, and Batgirl is supposed to look over Gotham in his absence. When she runs into Robin during her patrol, even though Bruce specifically told Jason not to go out, Barbara decides to intervene to have a serious, but caring talk with him. It does end up mostly like that... with the addition of 5am sushi.

    Sometimes It Wasn't Easy

With Bruce out of commission thanks to Ivy's latest poison, Jason sets out for his first, inofficial, unsanctioned solo patrol as Robin. It goes pretty well, as far as he is concerned, until a concerned big bird from Blüdhaven shows up to "help".

    Compromised

When Dick gets injured in one of the worst parts of town during their monthly training sessions, Jason takes him to a safe-house of his own that Dick never knew he had, in order to treat the wound. Little does Dick know it would be far from the last surprise that evening.

    A Father's Fear

Batman gets injected with fear gas when he and Robin try to stop Scarecrow after he sets a library on fire, so he knows that thinking Jason might still be in there is very likely a fear toxin hallucination. But is it really? On the off chance that it might be real and he would let his son die if he didn't act, Bruce jumps back into the fire...

    August 16th

August 16th had never been a good day for Batman. Faced once again with the annual reminder of a death in the bat family, Bruce finds himself thinking back on how he fought for and ultimately lost the Robin he failed to save, the son he failed to protect: Jason Todd.

    Red

Once a snake has shed its old skin, it will never be able to crawl back into it again. No damage done to a person ever fully heals. From the Asylum to All Hallow’s Eve, Jason Todd had learned this lesson the hard way.

Not Just A River In Egypt

Jim Gordon has spent enough time around Gotham's vigilantes to have figured out their identities, even if he has no solid proof. Technically, he should arrest them all. Practically, Jim finds the lines between what is just and what is right to be increasingly blurry. The fact that one of them is part of both his family and their family does not make it any easier.

    Silent Protectors

In the wake of Batman’s unmasking, Barbara finds herself thinking about what ‘family’ really means to her... and what she will be willing to do to protect it.

    Rorschach

Following the activation of the Knightfall protocol, Alfred ponders the night that claimed his master's secret identity. Of all the hundreds and thousands of things that happened, one sticks out like a sore thumb: "I've found Jason."

    Silent Sufferers

Bruce’ and Alfred’s ‘deaths have left the family in shambles and no one suffers more than Dick. In a moment of what he deems temporary insanity, Jason decides to help his brother. He never expected anything in return.

    Reciprocity

Some people were married to their work. Lucius has always worked hard to avoid that pitfall, but that doesn’t mean he does not care. Wayne Enterprises and its owners have always been good to him, and he is determined to repay the favor, far beyond Bruce Wayne’s grave.

    Hiding In Plain Sight

It started with a borderline insane attempt to get Superman’s signature and became a chance to bond with his siblings. He doesn’t care how silly and insane the idea might seem. Dick will totally go to a comic convention in full costume, if that means he gets to spend time with his brothers and sister.

    A Normal Life

It is August 16th in Gotham yet again. As Jason does his best to ignore the painful memories his birthday evokes, fate seems determined to make him celebrate his 21st.

Compensating - Five Times Barbara Gordon Saved A Bat... And One Time They Saved Her

Behind every great man stands an even greater woman. Behind every Bat stands a girl whose silk hides steel: Barbara Gordon.

    Campaign For Family

Christmas has arrived at the manor, and so has most of the batfamily. Barb has brought her PlayStation, Dick has brought his usual cocky charm, Alfred has brought the food and Jason is being Jason. Hilarity ensues.

    Ill Weeds Grow Apace

In Gotham and Blüdhaven, holidays are not a time for joy. In Gotham and Blüdhaven, one year after Batman’s public unmasking, the holidays find four watchful protectors realizing that no time of peace lasts forever.

    Differential Son

Jason has fatally shot Julian Day and the confrontation Bruce had with him afterwards has left both of them rattled and injured. In the aftermath, Bruce tries to find and talk to Jason once again, but it doesn't turn out quite the way he planned.

    Witch Of Gotham

While recovering from serious injuries given to him by Killer Croc, Jason finds himself getting roped into joining Barb, Dick and Tim for a session of a co-operative board game called "Witch Of Salem". Madness ensues.

    Disassembly

The Riddler has set a trap for The Red Hood, expecting him to be nothing but a brainless brute, who will charge head-first into his doom. Things don't go quite as planned.

    Right On Target

When Jason goes to the local gun range to work off some frustration from his latest patrol, the last person he expects to meet is Alfred, but not all surprises are of the bad kind.

    A Matter Of Perspective

Sometimes miracles do happen. In this case, the miracle of all four of them managing to get away from Gotham on a well-deserved vacation for a week, and Tim will be damned if he will let the memory of a clown and a handful of paparazzi spoil it.

    A Signal Of Hope

None of the Robins had ever liked the galas held at the manor, but while their own experiences before during and after the event may have been as different the boys were from each other in general, one thing Bruce knew for sure: he would always, always be there to defend his sons from the vultures of this world.

    Silent Arrangements

Alfred has always been happy to think of himself as a second father to Bruce and a grandfather to all of the boys, even if he would never dream of being bold enough to press the matter, so it truly is a slip of tongue when he answers Bruce’s out-of-the-blue question of what he wants for Father’s Day, with “to have all of my young masters under the same roof for once”. He should have known Bruce would take it seriously.

Given Captain America's shield is made of either Vibranium or a Vibranium-Steel Alloy: Vibranium must be a transition metal. Because it doesn't rust - even when lost in the Potomic - it should join silver, gold and platinum as a noble metal.

    Ditto for Adamantium.

This is the periodic table that fucks with quantum mechanics to put the marvel elements where they belong. It should work for Marvel-616, the cinematic universe (Marvel-199999) and even the tie-in video games.

Or: the headcannon where the author always was fascinated by Technecium, and knows just enough quantum mechanics to be dangerous.
